History

The idea to establish Khoren and Shooshanig Avedisian School was birthed by Khoren and Shooshanig Avedisians, their son and his wife – Edward and Pamela Avedisian, and the Executive Director of the Armenian Missionary Association of America (AMAA) in 1987-2000, Reverend Dr. Movses B. Janbazian.)

It is undoubtedly clear to say that this school is founded on the vision and faithful endeavors of these devoted persons. Moreover, we would like to make special reference to the AMAA’s Armenian Representative from 1994-2011, Rev. Dr. René Léonian, who substantiated the establishment of the school among Armenia’s different government authorities. Purchase of the building of the former educational complex in Yerevan’s South-Western District ensued. Hundreds of children have been educated over the past 15 years. The ceremonial opening of the Khoren and Shooshanig Avedisian School was held on September 20, 1999, and it continues in its pursuit to educate both today’s generation of children and the future generations of the Armenian nation.

The students receive a holistic and comprehensive education in an atmosphere of respect and love, where Chistian values and Armenian culture are honored. This is where the stage is set for the forming of the good moral character of the Armenian child, teenager or adolescent.

The school is part of the Armenian Missionary Association’s mission in pursuing, (among other endeavors), a comprehensive and quality education for children along with a concern and care for their future. Equally important during these especially trying times in the country is the number of jobs being provided to 60 staff at the school. To date, a 5th generation of students has graduated and continued their education at a tertiary level, enrolling at universities in Armenia. We are proud to say these students have graduated to also become model citizens in our nation.

In 2004, on Teacher’s Day, the Ministry of Education and Science of the RA awarded the Principal of Yerevan’s Khoren and Shooshanig Avedisian School, Ms. Melania Geghamyan with the Ministry’s Gold Memorial Medal. She was nominated the principal of the year, and recognised for her considerable contribution to the education of students, her years-long pedagogical activity, and for her significant contribution to both the education and science sectors of Armenia.

The last years are proof that the school body has sustained and progressed by applying principles the education system developed over decades. By incorporating the global private school experience in its activity, this school has become one of the finest institutions in Armenia’s education system. There are currently 40 children registered in the school’s newly-built kindergarten. In addition, there are another 287 older students that the school provides education to.

Khoren and Shooshanig Avedisian School is under the management of the Armenian Missionary Association of America.
